Old Forge Pizza Express was started in early 2005 by two friends and Old Forge, PA natives raised on Old Forge-style pizza. Jeff and Jim grew up, left town, travelled the world tasting different foods -- but ultimately realized the best food they ever had was Old Forge Pizza. And they wanted everyone to try it. So they started Old Forge Pizza Express to bring this legendary pizza-style to people in as quick, convenient and efficient a means as possible. And here we are.
After setting their minds on this project, the first thing Jeff and Jim did was rent an old restaurant and use it as a test kitchen to develop the famous Old Forge Pizza Express dough. Following months of experimentation, they finally arrived upon the current recipe, which yields an all-natural dough so light and airy and low on carbohydrates that it became the gold standard for Old Forge-style pizza dough. That is to say, it was better than any Old Forge-style pizza dough that existed at the time or ever existed since Italian immigrants from Northeastern Pennsylvania concocted this stuff around the turn of the 20th century in the first place. These guys couldn't even boil water when they started, and yet they'd created something amazing that had people lined up into the parking lot of their first retail store.
The dough Jeff and Jim created thus became the cornerstone of Old Forge Pizza Express, which began life as a stand-alone quick-service pizza shop of about 1500 square feet in Clarks Summit, PA. Demand for other locations pushed the company's expansion, but with commercial real estate prices soaring the guys needed to find alternatives to traditional space to keep the business model viable. This drove all sorts of innovation, including an eye-catching mobile pizza store, and soon there were additional locations that began to vary in size and shape to occupy a much smaller square footage. That's the kiosk and low-overhead model that Old Forge Pizza Express has today -- something concise, easy to operate and wildly affordable so anyone dreaming of owning their own business can do so.
In time, the company also began selling its popular pizza dough wholesale into restaurant and grocery-store chains, and also doing more and more fundraising. The launch of this online-ordering website -- which allows Old Forge Pizza Express products to be shipped anywhere -- is the culmination of Jeff and Jim's master plan, which was to have the delicious pizza dough they created out of thin air -- this regional cult product originally known only in northeastern Pennsylvania -- reach as many people throughout America as possible.
